"Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and the East Japan Rail Company have announced a deal that will provide Sony PSP rentals to passengers riding in first-class "Green Car" seats on Hayate trains. The offer begins October 1 and ends March 31, 2007. To be eligible for the campaign, customers must purchase a travel package through View, JR East's official travel agency."

Lucky Japanese...

There seem to be a lot of requirements to be eligible. It's still cool though!

Yeah, it seems like there are a few hoops to jump through, but it would be worth it to play a PSP while killing time on the train ;) I guess they have to weed out potential thieves?

I personally think the PSP's will be attached to the train with some kind of chain system or so. Well, I duno how the US trains are, but a lot of belgian trains are offering wifi. Pretty cool to be able to surf the net/ playing multiplayer games while being on the train.

We have trains here???

The US did used to have Amtrak, however so many people have shuned it in favor of driving or flying that they went under, and are only marginally still around soley due to the US government stepping in and keeping them afloat. Won't be seeing anything of that sort on the various subway systems, that's for darn sure.

Got to ride the UK rail though, and that was an interesting experience! As much as I enjoy driving, I'd glady ride their train system for long trips... I believe at least some of them might follow suit with the PSP thing, as they had already outfitted the train for people to use laptops in.

I thought the same thing about the PSP being physically connected somehow to the train to prevent stealing, but I wasn't sure how they could do it without disturbing the comfort of the player... an actual "chain" would be too heavy/bulky.... perhaps some sort of heavy duty cable tie?

Just one of them metal cables in a plastic tube kind of thing. You can buy them to lock your laptop onto your desk so it doesn't get stolen, they don't weigh much and they're strong. Would sound perfect to me.

Ah, gotcha... sorry, my first thought was actual heavy duty chain linkage... :P
