Pull back the curtain on the Internet, and you'll find something straight out of the Industrial Revolution: Huge diesel generators, enormous electrical switches and fat, concrete pipes all occupy big swaths of space in data centers.

interesting sight, check it out!

Some of those shots look more akin to the engine room of the old Enterprise, just with less red. ;)

That's some pretty heavy grade stuff, and very impressive. Thanks for the link Gibson!

Just think of how cold it must be working in one of those buildings..............Must be colder than working underground in NORAD.........;) And that place gets pretty cold.

Why would it be cold in there, and what exactly is norad?

Yep, Stargate Command is in Cheyenne Mountain, along with NORAD and other stuff too... If you don't believe me, you'll recognize the photo

It's a pretty cool place, I used to go out there a few times a month with my old job before I moved out here to Mo.
Just read this week that they are shutting down and turning it into a standby type of place to use only incase of attack. Everything is being moved out to Peterson AFB to the 1st Space Command.

wouldn't that be NOAD, unless you would somehow get the R from american in there.

Seems kind of dumb to move out of such a well equiped space. Makes no sense, or are they cutting budgets?

If it was designed 40 or more years ago it probably dosent matter what they do to fix it up its probably past its prime. Not to mention just about everybody in the universe knows about it..

I would be willing to bet they have several way more secure places to hang out.

And sbrehm72255 how cool you actually got to hang there.8-)

Actually as I read somewhere it has been brought up-to-date just recently so why move out?

From what I understand, it costs way to much to maintain the place while it's fully manned. With the tech that we have these days, they say that they can run the Air Defence from just about anywhere. NORAD as we know it will go away but it will remain a stand-by bace just like other underground bases that also have become inactive, like SAC at Offett AFB in Nebraska where Mr Bush flew to during 911.
(my dad programmed for them as well. At one time he was one of the top military programers, back in the day.........;)).

You also have to realize that the military spends money like it's going out of style and has no problems spending millions to update someplace just to shut it down a year later.

Makes you wonder if Al Gore invented the Matrix too? Was he thinking of that when he created the internet?

That's pretty sweet...I thought the internet was more of a giant computer...didn't expect anything like that.

Happens all the time mainly due to remodeling contracts.......;) It costs more to get out of a contract than it does to go ahead and let the work be done. And the contracts were made long before they decided to shut the place down, that why this happens all the time. I saw it happen all the time over in Europe after the end of the cold war and they started pulling troops out and shutting down bases. They would remodel a complete base only to turn it over and have it leveled the next year.

Im in the Navy, and it doesn't just happen to bases... I've seen ships go through a multi-million dollar shipyard period to get fixed, new equipment etc. only to be decommissioned 6 months later. I know in those instances it comes down to folks not planning enough in advance to realize wether or not they are going to need that ship long enough to make the yard period worth it.

Well, atleast they can sell a ship to some museum or anything. I don't see them do that with NORAD

Ships are retained for later service as is NORAD, just in case. The US Navy has a huge inactive fleet...........;)
That's where all the Battle ships came from that were in service recently they don't get rid of anything unless it's totally useless.

Not so far from where I live there is lying a russian sub. The russian army sold it to the museum a long time ago. (it's still in the water though, it's not like they got it out and put it in a museum, the sub itself is like a part of the museum)

Heck, the old USSR sells just about anything to anybody with money. All they care about is the cash.

thats what I'm saying...he had the Matrix in mind when he invented the internet..then just held onto that idea to make a movie later down the road
