I went to see the doctor the other day for a physical and I got some bad news. My cholesterol is way too high for a person of my age (32) who had a grandfather die in his early thirties of a heart attack. I only weigh 200lbs and I'm 6ft tall so being overweight isn't an issue. I guess I just have bad genes....
The doctor put me on 500mg of Niacin, an aspirin, and 1000mg of Omega 3 daily. I also have to eat better and exercise more (who doesn't?)
I was wondering if anyone else here has had these kind of problems and what kinds of things have you done to help? I know there's medication I can take to lower things but I really don't want to have to go that route yet unless I can't control it other ways.

Also pick up and take One A Day Cholestrol Plus Vitiams. Do some reading on Poliscanol.

I have started taking a multi-vitamin but I didn't notice they had a cholesterol formula. I'll check into that.
As far as the poliscanol goes, I'll check up on it. Not much shows up on a google search for it, is that the correct spelling?
Thx for the suggestions!

I've been on meds for a few months for my cholesterol problem. Diet and exercise didn't help at all. I'm still on a strick diet but I've finially got mine down to a safe level of 173, before the meds it was as high as 255.

welcome to the club.
i was 32 when i went on blood pressure and cholesterol medicine.
my blood pressure was 152/94 and my cholesterol was 257. i was put on attennol and diatrin(something like that) for blood pressure and leyscol and another drug for cholosterol. i also weighted 255lbs and i am 5'11" so i was told to lose some weight.
i lost 45lbs and was able to drop to just attennol and lyscol for control. losing weight really helped as i am now 40 with bloodpressure of 124/72 and 163 cholesterol count at my last appt.
mine is heriditary like yours seems to be.

Mine is heriditary as well, my Grand dad died after having 4 heart attacks and my dad has had 2 open heart surgeries along with a quad bypass. My weight has always been under control, never weighted more than 200lbs and I'm 6'3". At one point my cholesterol was 244 and at the time I was riding my road bike around 6,000 miles a year along with a bunch of mountain bike time.
I blame my old man for the problem.

My overall cholesterol was 228 and my LDL was 178. Heart disease is prevalent on both sides of my family so I figured I'd better start taking care of this now.
Thx for the info Scott. Looks like there some good and bad press about it. I'll keep checking around and see what the concensus says.

Giving up the beer is one of the biggest things that you can do to help bring down your cholesterol count..........;) I haven't had a beer in the longest time, I think the last time was on Veterans day with some of my old Army buddies.

Good luck with that XJ, I know that keeping an active lifestyle really helps, regardless of cholesterol.

My wife has high blood pressure, thanks in part to her genes. Her biological father just died earlier this year of a heart attack, he was only like 52. I think that is the meds she is on, along with fish oil pills and watching her diet. I'm somewhat lucky as I'm not in great shape by any means (put on too much weight since the kids were born) but my blood pressure and cholesterol are good.
