I resently installed a x1600 pro AGP card in my computer, with the new 6.7 catalyst drivers. After running the card a while, and playing WOW i wondered why the card didnt have any real preformance boost compared to my raedon 9800.

So i wanted to change back to see the preformance with my 9800 with the same WOW video settings. I plugged in the card... It booted to boot screen... Booted to HELLO, and then the screen went black . every time i boot the screen just goes black...

So im in a real pickle if anyone could help me that would be great... Thx

Did you remember to uninstall the ATi and nVidia display drivers when you switched cards? Does your monitor go into standby (orange color) or does it stay on (green)? Did you remember to connect the poewr connector to the 9800?

The drivers are catalyst display drivers and both the raedon 9800 and the raedon x1600 drivers are included with catalyst 6.7 .... so i didnt uninstall the drivers,

My monitor works fine until i reach the desktop, and then it turns completely black.

It doesn't matter if they both use the same drivers, the drivers are installed differently with different settings for both cards. Boot into SAFE Mode and remove/unistall the drivers reboot and reinstall the drivers again.

I had no problems with running the x1600 without removing the old drivers, probably the reason i got careless. But i can see how stupid that really was:( , probably too tired, its 1 am in denmark  ... Thx for the help, Ill get back to you tommrow and tell ya if i fixed it...

Well now atleast you know when changing graphics cards even if it is the same manufacturer you always have to uninstall the old drivers first.

Yep, and i always do. But it just seemed to that you didnt need to with catalyst drivers... LOL... But thanks a lot:)

Yeah, Werty and Sbrehm caught that one... :)

Just as a note though, your 9800 may indeed put forth better performance in pure numbers, but you need to take into account it doesn't have all the same eyecandy it is rendering, such as the difference in shader models. And also "high detail" on one card does not mean the same settings will be used for "high detail" on another card for some games...

Yeah, i figured it was the eyecandy that created lag in WOW, but right now im saving up for a new rig. and the big question was... Do i keep the x1600 or do i sell it and use the money for my new in ½ a years time???

--EDIT--
I tried useing a driver cleaner and the screen still goes black??? :???:

Try clearing your system CMOS and pulling the battery and let it sit for a bit. Then try it again.

No point in selling the x1600 unless you are happy enough using that 9800 until you can eventually upgrade to a new GPU/rig. If so, then you might as well I guess...

Since your x1600 is AGP, I can infer it's an older motherboard... Make sure you have the most recent BIOS update installed on your motherboard. Otherwise I'm out of ideas at the moment, because the power draw difference should actually favor the x1600 if anything I'd imagine?

I would keep what you have now as you won't get much cash for either card.

Does your monitor go into standby (orange color) or does it stay on (green)?

Just got home and will try the CMOS and update the bios, but updated the bios 2 months ago so should be the newest...

The screen goes into standby.

I'm happy enough with my 9800 for now, its not a lot that i get out of selling the card, but anything that contributes to my new rig is welcomed. :)

Still doesnt work after the CMOS, and bios update. I also tried system rstore point with no effect, kindda feeling my GPU is dying a slow and terrible death.

I get into the welcome screen and then when i see the first icons the screen shuts off to standby.

Out of curiosity, what are the full details on your PSU?

See if it boots fine without any display drivers installed and run DriverCleaner.

Did you remember to plug the power connector to the card 9800Pro?

As a last resort do fresh install of XP since your 9800Pro worked before your tried the X1600 and didn't uninstall your display drivers first.

Its a

reference ATI raedon 9800 pro
128mb Ram
380MHz core
??? Memory

I check the power cable and even switched connectors so it shouldnt be a power problem. And it boots fine when i remove and cleaned for drivers and also works in VGA mode. So i think i will have to do a fresh install of XP, cause im out of ideas.

Sry mistaked for GPU.

Actually its a 3-4 year old dell so i wouldnt know about the power supply, but i checked out the standard PSU's for dimension 8300, so i figure its the same:roll:

305 W Total output
100-120 VAC, 9.0 A OR 200-240 VAC, 4.5 A; 50-60 Hz Input
+5 V DC, 22.0 A
+12 VA DC, 18.0 A
+12 VB DC, 18.0 A
-12 V DC, 0.5 A
+3.3 V DC, 17.0 A
5 VSB DC, 2.0 A
Max. combined power on +5 V and +3.3 V outputs is 150 W
Max. combined current on +12 VA and +12 VB outputs is 22 A

Uhh, this is a Dell PSU, and about four years old to boot?!? If it is wearing out then it could be causing these issues... I'd at least test with a second 350watt to 400watt PSU as well if you can, since Dell runs conservative on their PSU wattage ratings.

Have you tried plugging all of the system specs into the PSU wattage calculator and making sure it was okay? Don't forget to change that "Capacitor Aging" setting, and watch those total numbers jump... ;) http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp (http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp)

Its a close one, rounding the 305 Watts. Ill still want to do a fresh install of my HD just in case it works, and since I dont have a spare PSU right now but will try to get one.

Most likely whats going on is you didnt uninstall fully the Cat drivers after taking your X1600 out. Ive had this same problem before. You have to literaly go into the Add/Remove menu and take everything ATI out and then try putting your 9800pro back in. Also, like what was already said, most likely why your getting same performance is because the X1600 gives you ALOT more eye candy than the 9800pro like HDR and SM3.0 for instance. It also has temproal AA which oyu might have turned on. Also if you can take the HSF off your 9800pro and see what chip it is. If it is an R360 chip you can flash it to 9800XT and get more performance out of it.
