None on a regular basis except for Bjorn3D. I'm serious. You guys seem to be good at taking news from all over the map.
Occasionally I'll check Rage3D just to get a different side on things, and because I own an 8500.
But I'm not quite obsessed enough with computers to spend all day looking at different hardware sites.

Scott, out of curiousity, why do you want to know what sites we visit? Do you plan to submit reviews to these sites?

physics25
06-02-2003, 11:51 PM
I do not read a whole lot, just 2-5 times a month for news so I get a lot at once. I visite forums more offten but I am still getting off the ground with my first PC :jump: that I built, so I will be more present online over the coming summer. Here are a few:
Tom's Hardware
This forum(duh)
MSI forum(I have a MSI MOBO that needs constant help)
Gaming forums as I get new games, I sine up for the forum for the game.
thats about it for now.

We are trying to get an idea of what level of tech sites you guys read.

Ozymandias
06-03-2003, 02:42 AM
depends; mailed approx 80+ sites to get their latest articles mailed to me (if you're the owner of a site i didn't contact yet, contact me on tim@nordichardware.com)

Core sites:
www.nordichardware.com (http://www.nordichardware.com) - just a great site (ad... ad... ad...)
www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com) - one of the best
www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com) - sometimes nice articles
www.envynews.com (http://www.envynews.com) - good articles and good newsposts
www.overclockers.com.au (http://www.overclockers.com.au) - their newsposts are worth gold...
www.amdmb.com (http://www.amdmb.com) - bits and pieces are interesting
www.madshrimps.be (http://www.madshrimps.be) - because I just won a contest there :p

And then 15 other sites in the second round (including bjorn3D :D)
after that there come the emailed reviews which seem/are interesting

Leon

Ok. No problem

Anyways, I should not have put Fark in my reply. They have nothing to do with technology. I should have read the name of the thread (What Computer Sites Do You Read) and not what you said

Hi Scott!

She's all working now, but I'll give you the somewhat condenced version of my weekend in hell. But first, here's a rundown of my new computer.

Epox EP-8RDA+ rev 1.1
Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)
Kingston HyperX PC2700 512MB
BFG GeForce FX 5600 256MB (once again- thank you!!)
WD Cavier 80MB w/ 8MB buffer
Lite-On 12x12x48
400W power supply
4- 80mm case fans (I'm going to add a 90mm blowhole soon)
all wrapped up in a ClearPC mid-tower case

(ok, some of that is just there for fun)

The problem was that I couldn't get the video card to work properly - kept getting a black screen in Windows. It turned out to be a BIOS & drivers issue. The nForce 2 drivers and the GeForce drivers didn't like each other, I guess.
So...12 reinstalls of windows with different combinations of drivers and BIOS versions later it just worked. I had to install things in this order:

Flashed the BIOS - ver. 8RDA3609
Installed the nForce 2 driver - ver. 2.03
Installed GeForce driver - ver. 44.03
prayed....and it worked!!
that time- the first 2 times I tried that combination it didn't work.

at any rate, everything is 5 by 5 now.

Now I just need to get a new CPU cooler so I can start overclocking!!!!!!

MissinLynx
06-17-2003, 01:23 AM
Hum, didn't it work w/ the nForce2 drivers that came w/ the MB ? I know I am still using mine after the FIASCO that nVidia called new nForce drivers -THEY SUCKED FOR SURE. I tried those 2.03's and didn't like em either so just stuck w/ what Asus supplied w/ my A7N8X Deluxe rev 1.06 MB - 1 reload/reinstall later.

morganrhys
06-17-2003, 02:23 AM
Nope! The drivers that came with the mobo didn't work. What really drives me nuts is that I put together a similar system for my wife 2-3 weeks ago.

Athlon XP 2400+
Epox EP-8RDA
Crucial PC2700 512MB
BFG GeForce 4200 Ti (which I also tried in my computer with the same results)
etc...

Hers I had no problems with. I had it together in like 3 hours (as opposed to 3 days for mine!)

MissinLynx
06-17-2003, 12:04 PM
hum, could b the diff between the "+" version of the board and the standard non + version

Could b soooo many things, but interesting. What versions were both boards? Was 1 a more recent rev maybe??How come the wife got the Corsair :D? LOL

Anyways, back OT:

I'm a decent member on the Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.infopop.net) forums - the best site I've found so far in terms of sheer knowledge - ask anything, and one of the 50,000 unique personalities will find you an answer on any topic

I'm now visiting Bjorn3d daily (well, nightly) for the fresh perspective and slightly smaller community, since having two homebases is better in my opinion.

And I read through the front page of Ars as well as:
HardOCP
Slashdot

I also visit these sites about once a week for anything from information to entertainment:

Xicons.com
Wincustomize.com
drunkcyclist.com
stlbiking.com

Perhaps that is a good list to work with... ;)

-----

Tech sites I read daily:
Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/index.ars)
Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/)
Tom's Hardware Guide (http://www.tomshardware.com/)

Tech News sites I check daily:
Dailytech (http://www.dailytech.com/)
Tgdaily (http://www.tgdaily.com/index.html)

I also admit that if I'm interested in a specific peice of hardware or software and the above sites don't have it already, then I'll just google up a review or two from anyplace google can reach... But between the above 5 sites, I find that I can catch 99% of the tech news (Promptly), keep up to date on current affairs, and enjoy drooling over fancy hardware as I browse the reviews and editorials.

I also infrequently visit those below:
Extremetech.com

Religiously Frequent:

http://www.tomshardware.com/ (http://www.tomshardware.com/)
http://www.hardocp.com/ (http://www.hardocp.com/)

Or, you could just say I frequently check the entire internet at least once a week, either one works... 8) If I spot a review linked from Dailytech's daily list of WWW hardware reviews I'll usually end up at one of the sites I didn't mention...

Edited: Because I knew I forgot someone...

i wouldn't quite call it reliable though, anyhow, the only place i really visit (hardware related that is) is madshrimps. I do read reviews n all from other sites, but i visit those by clicking the newslinks at madshrimps.

what casues IE to crash is XP by M$, theres glitches in XP that cause IE problems

If it was the OS that made it crash the OS would crash with it so its more so IE crashing with no influence from the OS.

For instance lets say you are playing a game that has bugs and a patch to the game fixes it, then its the game that has problems and not the OS.

IE KICKS ASS DONT DISS IE LOL, you can only edit professional websites with frontpage using IE and its much easier and reliable than any other engine or whatever you wanna call it

Actually I found out by accident Opera lets you view the source/coding behind a website just like FrontPage. From there it's a simple ctrl+A then ctrl+C then ctrl+V into FrontPage, then edit away... :P

you can view source code with firefox too (i've been using it for over 2 years now and it's really good!) just right click and select view source code :)

I love the discussion, but I didn't mean to start a hijack on this thread. I think it is time to create an IE vs Firefox vs Opera thread.

Beats me, I'm new here. I guess it stands to reason since it's be done everywhere else. I made a thread for it in general software, but my main point was that this thread has been derailed pretty heavily.

i'm new too, but i'd be surprised if there hasn't been any thread about it on here before, after all, this was quite the discussion a year or two ago on many boards

A better question would be which sites don't I visit. I am a voracious reader and do a huge amount of research on products that I'm either reviewing or considering buying. So if it's technical I've probably been there.

Favorites

Bjorn3D (I spend the most time here)
Anandtech (not as good as it once was, but still excellent reviews)
Bit Tech (excellent reviews and good technical expertise)
Ace's Hardware (excellent hardware reviews)
Xtreme Systems (best OC site on the net)
[H]OCP (Best case and monitor forums on the Web, their technical expertise is good, but not as good as in the early days, they all went to Xtreme Systems)
ArsTechnica (once very good but not anymore, they still have a few good forums like cases and cooling)
Silent PC Review (excellent information on keeping a quiet PC)
Wilder's (best security site on the Web)
Ubuntu (best Linux for home IMHO)

There are a ton more but most are related to my job which is in DB Administration

Silent PC Review (excellent information on keeping a quiet PC)

I read them as well (and being part of their forum), they're the ones that got me 'addicted' to keeping my PC as quiet as possible and it's their information that has contributed to my main rig now being almost totally silent.
