With a little bit of hard work (OK...maybe not "that" little... ) and a few monthes of folding contest, I'm pretty sure we can beat 'em up Scott!!!

Anyhow, they REALLY deserve the 1st place!!!

A few of their user have around 50-200 processes runnning

Das Capitolin

One of their users pushes 27k in points every day, and another does 23k daily! I am in the top 150 worldwide producers with 4k points each day, but those two guys alone make more points by themselves then some of the top-100 teams do each day!

Let's devise a way to recruit them over... but I don't think they could even if they wanted to. Changing the config on 200+ systems is a major undertaking.

Scott

I am just wondering if their bosses or the schools know what they are doing? Good way to lose a job or get booted out of school 200CPU's is definate abuse of the situation.

Kougar
08-10-2006, 08:34 PM
I was wondering exactly how they did it myself... But I bet some work at places where they have access to mainframes that they can run F@H on. If Folding@home had been ported to the AIX OS and using POWER5 or POWER5+ binaries I know a guy they would run it on a few big iron IBM mainframes that he works with.... but since it has not and will never be that option's out for any AIX-unix based system.

On a bit of good news though, Overclockers Australia is still overtaking HardOCP... looks like they will take 1st place in 140 days. I'll be happy just to see them taken out of 1st place by anyone. ;)

Scott
08-10-2006, 08:42 PM
Yep, it will be good to see them start to decline. Someday Bjorn3D will have just as many forum members and will overtake them in Alexa

At least that is my dream.

pym
08-10-2006, 08:57 PM
One may dream, but I would not limit myself to dreaming...
We'll do everything needed in order to make it real, even if it won't be enough, at least we gave our best shot.
Good luck Bjorn3D!!!!

Must be very busy, because I haven't seen much of you at VH either.

Welcome to the forums, and I thank you for folding.

Have been pretty busy lately indeed. Plus I've been dealing with my second defective XFX 7900 GT from Newegg... bombs out totally on the Deep Freeze portion of 3dMark06. RMA is being handled, have it packaged up and ready to ship off Monday for a replacement.

So, all in all, been doing other things, plus my daughter got married last weekend. Watercooling parts and modding parts are ready, just haven't gotten down to them yet.

Will be making my presence known more and will likely have questions. Once I have things all set, may see about running a second copy of F@H on the dual core.

Off to bed before I fall over... see you all around!

I start back in school monday and we have tons of computers running at my school. I would think there are around 80 or something running 8 hours a day. I could try suggesting F@H to the IT guy we have. I'm part of the student IT-support group in charge of helping other students with their PC's so shouldnt be too hard to convince him :D

Its for a good cause and F@H tasks only run when the computer is idle. So hope he wants to install the console. But I can imagine him to be skeptical :)

Worst case scenario, ill have to install it on all the computers myself :S

Welcome to the forums Mirrim! Nice to see another (prettier) face around here...

Toxic, when you make sure he is using the Bjorn3d team number, ya should also check to see if he is running the client, and running it as a service. That way there is no DOS window for the computer users to mess with and they won't even know it's there... ;) Having the program limit it's RAM usage is a very good idea, actually. F@H tends to inflate the pagefile quite easily...

Mirrim

I run the Windows version and it sits in the systray. On this computer it is running near constantly and I can boost it up to using 90 pct on the cpu since I only do email and surfing on this computer atm. My gaming computer runs it when I am out of a game, I just quicklaunch and it's good. Never use the screensaver parts though.

Will have a third cpu running once the video card issue is settled and the other system is built and up. ;)

That's odd, over here FAH doesn't seem to use that much ram, so I can't even imagine it using a pagefile. ATM FAH is using 56.464 kB here. So that isn't very much is it. (unless you have an old comp with 256mB ram).

All i know right now is that he has asked if anyone else in the schooldistrict have had problems with it, and he will run it on a few computers. Its the beginning of school and he has a lot to do right now and so do I since its my busyiest year.

First things he will test is bandwith issues and cpu and power usage. But he might make a team for the school when he has tested the program, so if we get any bennefit it wont be for long :(

But its for the good of the world, and we are just going to have to think bigger then our own forums.

just an update for you all, and I will talk to him ASAP. But like i said i'm very busy, which you can probably see on how little I post these last few days.

Well it does something, because my Core 2 Duo rig runs with almost empty RAM and an unused pagefile... but when I started up both clients the pagefile suddenly popped into existance full of 68mb of something and the RAM usage grew. You are right in that the memory/virtual memory of F@H is actually rather small... but it causes something to happen with XP. Watch your pagefile after you do a clean boot when you load up one or two F@H programs... ;) My P4 does this as well, but as it is bogged down with programs I'm sure F@H had to duke it out with something or other for RAM space.

Uhm, as long as your ram isn't full it shouldn't be using the pagefile?

Maybe disable all of the apps that startup with Windows? I only run one process and not RAM sucking here.

Kougar
08-15-2006, 06:05 AM
Okay, some hard numbers for the rig in my sig:

24 Running proccesses (Two F@H clients running + Speedfan + Firewall, etc)
Pagefile usage=313mb
2gb of RAM: 268mb used

My second P4 computer:

49 Running Processes (Everything under the sun running)
Pagefile usage: 768mb
1GB of RAM: 508mb used

Conclusion: Windows sucks :-P I guess the problem is that I haven't told Windows how to run that Pagefile yet... Guess I'm off to follow that advice in Pagefile optimizatizing that (I think it was Markkleb?) posted that I'd bookmarked for reading... ;)

Goto the performance settings in the control panel and change your settings to this.

I think this setting tells XP to use all available memory first before using the pagefile; give it a try.

I have that same article bookmarked. Should take the time to read it this evening. And going to try that change to system cache and see how things flow. I'd like to eek more folding out of the systems if I can.

oh ok, does wu mean how many youve done, im currenly working my way thro 125000, currently done 40000 after a few hours, is there a way i can speed it up, allow it to use all the cpu power?

Kougar
08-17-2006, 03:33 AM
You can run two of them at once on your dual-core CPU, otherwise it is configured to use all of your spare CPU power already. Right click your taskbar and select Task Manger, and go to the Performance tab to double-check. Folding is usually a lengthy process measured in days, almost never less than 8 full hours for any WU on any system. Best you can do it let it run overnight, and turn off any CPU intensive programs when you do.

Edit: I should mention that you MUST set each F@H program with it's own different CPU ID if you decide to run two of them on your computer... ;)

Folding@HOme requires patients and you won't get any points until a WU has been completed.

nah all the computer realy run off the server, you sign on to the server and get access to different stuff with each one, like in my digital media class i sign on a different name and i get different stuff than my web design class

so i just need a admin pass and code (wich isnt hard to find as i have found my teachers stuff but am to honest to change my grades)

ill just tell them its helping cancer and this is a easy way to help w/o donating money, and that i felt morely resposible, + its a easy fix if anyone is getting suspicisous.... a nice little delete and they cant do anything

i know kids who used our school server for pooling all there music for there ipods, kids from different school even

A lot of never-ending games are like this. There was a documentary on TV a few years ago on an older game of the same kind, people lost their job, didn't do anything else, and someday they decided to stop and find a job, but got addicted again and it continued like this.

markkleb
09-30-2006, 04:18 AM
Its that way with anyone who is even a little addictive. I have troubke with gambeling (Reno is a bad place for that). Its not Renos fault that I mess up.

Same with gaming, drinking, drugs or any thing that ur addicted to. If it wasent the game it would have been something else.

Just like violent games, people who go out an commit violence had problems way before the game..

vfrex
09-30-2006, 01:18 PM
^Mark hit the nail on the head on that issue. People need to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. This concept reverberates throughout many of the problems in the US and other Western countries.

You eat too much ---> You get fat
You don't focus on your work/studies ---> You miss out on major opportunities
.
.
.

On another note, its 43 degrees outside, but was close to 70 during the day. I can't tell what temperature it is in my room, but let's look at my CPU. It is running at 100F, folding at 100%, overclocked from 1600->2200. SpeedFan is targetting 102F for the CPU. To do so at the current ambient temperature, it is running the CPU fan at 40/100.

they are failures in life, YAY WOW for creating failures

You said it correctly but your view is misguided. WOW did not create the failure, it just exposed it. If they're failures you can be sure they were going to turn out that way no matter what. It was just a matter of them finding what would screw them up. If it wasn't WOW it would be something else.

I'd agree with Mark and vFrex's viewpoints on this one. Are you going to blame the company that made the gun because some Sporting Goods store sold it to a guy who then went out and randomly killed people with it?

Unfortunately some states try to do that. :-(

WoW is more addictive than cocaine/heroine, at least cocaine/heroine give you a 20% chance not to be addicted, wow gives you a 10% chance. Thats right 90%of people who play wow stay playing wow, I am one of the 10%, so I think that World of Warcrack has its own mental tendancies to get ppl addicted just like heroine/cocaine, I do agree that it is partly them, but if you look at statistics, than you see

Sounds like the recent event here in Montreal, you probably heard about it, the guy that went out shooting people randomly in Dawson college. In his case, he was training with the Canadian Forces, that's probably how he got the guns, but the thing is that it's possible for Average Joe to get a Beretta Cx4 for sporting. It's illegal to pay 50¢ using pennies, but not to have that kind of thing in your house.

Anything that is better than a person's present reality is addictive. If their life within WoW or any other game is better than their real life, it's to be expected some people at the extreme end of the range of players are going to quit bothering with real life and spend as much of their time as they can instead inside their fictional virtual world. This happens with many MMORPG's, RPGs, or SIM games, not just WoW... Heck, to a lesser degree there are thousands and thousands of people that work, come home, and get on their computers every single night to play their favorite strategy, shooter, or RPG game.

Dragon, I'd head about that when it happened, but I never did hear the "why", I'll go google it up. Never heard that about his background either...

Well, naturally, we still heard about it days after, so we got some more info, wikipedia has some interesting pages.

Pretty freaky, similar things happened at École Polytechnique in 89, at Concordia University in 92 and now Dawson College. All in the same corner...

The bad part is that he influenced some people, there have been some people BSing that they would put bombs in High Schools in my corner, that kind...

You know, I've been folding for this team just becasue I believe it to be a good cause. I am curious though, what is the benifit of being the highest folding team? I mean is there a monitary reward here or a plaque or what? Does everyone do it just for the cause?

A little friendly competition is a good thing, I think. Was folding before coming to Bjorn3d because it was a good thing to do. My mother and two aunts died of lung cancer that spread. One grandmother died of early onset Alzheimers that she had for probably 25 years or so. Any little thing I can do to possibly further scientific knowledge in the interests of people's health, I do gladly. Not to mention it gives me personal satisfaction as my beau is starting his first year of Ph.D. studies in cellular biology, of which protein folding is a part.

As for addictive games, well sure... if a person has the personality, they'll find one thing or another that feeds it. I don't play WoW any longer, but I do quite enjoy MMOs as a genre. It's where I socialize with friends I've played with for nearly five years and the relationships now beyond the confines of the computer. Personally, I see meeting a potential mate (or a friend) in a game no different than my uncle and aunt who corresponded by chance in a "write a GI" program during the Viet Nam war. As soon as he got done with his tour, they met and got engaged. They've been married since with three grown children.

Comes down to the person. And Folding like fiends!

As of right now, USF has fallen victim to Bjorn3d.

USF - 305

I think my 2 WU's did it!

Winter's finally here (well at least the snow & wind are) so I'll have to turn on a couple more computers for heating. :)

Maybe I can move on from #15. :)

As for me I stopped to turn off FAH when I needed to have a little more RAM, I realized that it's only when I don't run FAH that my computer reboots for nothing.

The 3700+ san diego is one great OC'ing CPU but any reason why you didn't go with a dualcore? I guess $ can be an issue for some but then the 3700+ san diego isn't cheap either. Are waiting for AMD's next CPU lineup.

Yeah, money was the main thing. I found it for $70 shipped so it seemed like a good deal to me. Also picked up an XFX 7800GT for $100 :D

I don't know what he might be trying to imply (if anything). I have an XFX 7800 GTX and it's great. Sure, there's a new, faster model out, but I'm not upgrading for a while yet. (Maybe sometime next year.)

Yeah, I do that, and I have a friend who pays good money for my secondhand cards, so I can afford to do that. I will give you a little history of it if you want..

First I had a Giga-Byte 3D1 video card(2x6600 GT on one board)
I traded that to a friend for a laptop, acer 2800(or something along those lines)
sold the laptop for $675, bought the 7800gt, kept the 7800gt for a year , than sold it to my friend for $425. Than I bought the 7600gs(BAD move on my part) I spent like $150 on it and sold it within 2 weeks for $125, I than bought my 7900gt, kick ass card, spent $345 on it after taxes(still leaving me with $80, I than found out about my deals from ATI, so I returned the 7900gt about 2 weeks later(paid a $25 restocking fee), leavineg me with $400, the X1900XTX, cost me $305, after tax and shipping
