View Full Version : Folding Areana
I just thought that I would put a post in here for people to discuss folding if they had any questions etc... As I have not seen one so far. I also think there will be a bunch of new recrutes around soon.
For myself I want HELP. I downloaded the folding program and I can't get it to start, I have a little .doc file on my desk that says 0% done, it has not moved and I can't seem to start it. Judging by my CPU usage I am not running right now.

I am moving your post from the "contests" section to the "Distributed Computing" section. You will find the Folding @ Home FAQ (http://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/showthread.php?p=39934#post39934) there; which stands for frequently asked questions. You will also find about three other threads dedicated to F@H and questions and answers. Look here: http://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=70

I have a question as well: I couldn't get any folding done in the past few days because I keep getting the "Could not connect to work server" error, even after letting the client try to connect for hours.
My last WU was accepted, but I can't get a new one. The problem is probably not on my end, I've even reinstalled the program, but it just can't connect to the work server...
Are the servers up at the moment? Their stats page http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html, claims that some servers are running.
Can I do anything to remedy the problem?

How can you be so sure? I have not been having any problems at all. Has anyone else been having this issue?
BTW: reinstalling the client is not the best idea, as you might lose work or ruin a WU. Are you behind a firewall or have a proxy?

Everything is fine on my end.
Post a screenshot of your Folding window.

It all depends on what server you are. All users are divided over several servers. While one user might be able to get a new wu doesn't mean an other user is. All wu's and users are server specific so if the server is down the only thing you can do is wait.

Even so if it can't connect it would try to default to a backup server or DL a new WU to crunch while it waits. I'm not seeing this kind of a problem with any of my folding machines, so I'd suggest you verify that none of the F@H connection settings were modified from stock?

I don't think you'll get another WU until the server comes back online. I know another server can accept your completed wu and send it to the server when it comes back online again. But I don't think it can send you a new WU as the wu's are server bound and that would implicate you moving servers which basically isn't possible I think?

Why not just install another console client and run it?

It wasn't able to connect after submitting a WU. It stopped working at that point, the client worked fine before returning that WU.
I'm not using a proxy or a firewall. I've tried reinstalling F@H to a different directory, but it didn't help. I'm not using any resident anti-virus programs or any other applications capable of interfering with my outgoing connections.

The step counter goes up every once in a while, but nothing happens.

Why not just install another console client and run it?
Duno, if you're using the same username it might be using the same server again? I'm not really sure how that would go, might work, might not.
Well, Vaerelis, have you checked the running processes. If the steps are counting it might have gotten a new WU and might be processing it?

Vaerilis, your stats show that you are registering points in the last 24 hours.
If you are still having trouble, you might consider uninstalling the GUI version of the client, and replacing it with a console version just to troubleshoot.

Vaerlis, just a quick thought but have you made absolutely sure there are no F@H programs still trying to run in the background as a service? Might be a confliction or something...

Thank you for the recommendations.
I've uninstalled the GUI client and installed the console version, checked if there are any unwanted processes running in the background (found none), but still didn't manage to solve the problem.

...
...and the solution is: there are no deadlineless WUs currently available. I've changed the setting to "no preference" and now it works fine.
I wish they mentioned it on their front page or somewhere...

Strange, that photo DOES show you connected and was assigned to a server.
Exactly how did you configure it? For a base set up:
Ask before fetching\sending work: No
Use Internet Explorer settings: No
Use Proxy: No
If you are already using those settings and it is not working, then try changing Use internet explorer settings to Yes.

Read the last three lines of my post above :)
I'm folding at full speed at the moment.

*looks* Did you edit that in at the last second?? I didn't see that...
Glad you figured out what the problem was  They probably just ran out of deadline-less WUs, as quite a few people seem to run them. I've not heard of this happening before while I was folding for Anandtech...

The post was not edited (the forums engine would display the date of the last editing below the post). ;-)
The last few days resulted in no folding done, thanks to the "Client-core communications error: ERROR 0x1", I've learned not to let F@H start on startup. I wish the client would at least ask if I want to trash the work done in the past few days... The "auto-delete upon restart" (after Windows crashed during a F@H session due to a not folding related matter) feature is rather irritating.

The only times I lose a WU after a system crash is if the data or engine get corrupted, otherwise it'll restart from the last saved checkpoint. Never seen that kind of error message before, but I don't run any of mine as a service or at startup either... :|

Mine runs as a service, haven't had any problems with it though. I can understand the client deleting the WU if it's corruped though. Otherwise it would do all that work for nothing
