View Full Version : ok, so the BIOS update for the 7900GT didn't work, now what?

Ok, I applied the BIOS update to my 7900GT (t71g-ude7), flash went fine, rebooted, windows asked to reinstall the drivers, did that.. Got everything set up, still no change in the full-speed fan. 100% all the time, POST, Win xp sp2 loading, desktop, 3d games.
What next? Any advice would be great.
BTW: Ticket #62718, been going on for a bit now.

Did you try to use a controlling app like SpeedFan or RivaTuner?

Yes, both actually. I was told by XFX tech that the BIOS update allows the card to control itself, 40 desktop and 100?% on 3d apps I think it was. Unfortunately it is 100 % all the time.
The creator of rivatuner does not advertise 7900gt fan control.
I see that another thread (another poster) mentions that their exact same card model is behaving as mine is even after the flash.

Oh ok well lets hope XFX Support has an answer.

well their answer was to pull the card from my system, send it to them, let them see why it won't flash, then send it back to me.. It was made clear it was the only card I had, and they (XFX support) suggested TWICE I go buy one locally, use it while mine is in transit then RETURN it when mine comes back.
Not too cool.
Convinced NEWEGG to take it back after 6 months (WOW!) I'm now an owner of an EVGA 7900GTX.

It seems that the 7900GT UDE models seem to be immune to the BIOS fix. It appears XFX is in the process of testing a BIOS update just for these cards....which is good cause that full speed fan can really get to you quick.

XFX let me know the BIOS for that card is not working with for the fan fix and they are working on it.

They sent me one made especially by one of the engineers on a Friday evening and it still didn't work. What pushed me over the edge was that they suggested I buy a card locally, use it then return it once mine came back. I just don't think that is good form.
I had the card from 2 days after release until early last week going 24/7 at full speed. I know exactly what you mean. I might look into one of the silent 7950's from them for a 2nd system, but my 7900 is pretty fun tho.
thanks for clearing it up about the bios, it definitely seemed impervious to any attempts to silence the thing. :(

Dear Damn Dirty Ape,
Strangely enough we recently had a conference with our support teams across the world and we are having more than a few people with your very card having the same issue with the BIOS not adjusting the fanspeed. We currently have our engineers looking into this issue and should have a BIOS fix for this 7900GT UDE version soon.

I have the same card and the bios flash had no effect. It shows the newer bios version but the fan still runs 100% all the time. I've tried all the tips suggested (driver cleaner, rivatuner, speedfan). I'm hoping for a bios fix because the card is rock solid otherwise and I'd hate to RMA just get the fan to run slower in 2d apps.

Dear Damn Dirty Ape, I do not know why one of our techs suggested this as this is not a policy nor acceptable for anyone to suggest anything unethical to resolve your issue. Please post your suport ticket number so I can look into this matter and address it.
We continue to work on the BIOS concerning adjusting the fan speeds for this particular model and hope to have it available soon. when it is available we will be postin it along with the others on this site. Many thanks and props to Scott for allowing us to do this.

I'll tell you who the two were, one was Curtis and the other was Brian Chan I believe his name was. I have no idea of what the ticket # is now, I was able to return it to Newegg after 6 months for full refund and put it towards a 7900gtx evga, .
Sorry but after the tech(s) said mine was a very unusual case, and I told them I had only ONE card, they still insisted on me sending the card.. Then they came up with the 'go buy one' routine.. I've got no axe to grind at this point and no reason to make it up... I'd be pissed if I still had the card tho.. I doubt they noted that suggestion in the notes IMHO.
hope you guys get it resolved.

The sooner the better...but they told us they are working on it and a loud card is better then a broken one. :))

Has there been a recent a bios update for the t71g-ude7 boards? I tried the one posted in late August or early Sept but the fan still runs 100% all the time. I'd hate to RMA an otherwise awesome card.

Mine still turns at 100% all the time as well, but right now I can't RMA my card as I need my system on a daily basis and I don't have a back-up system or video card.......:(

Dear UDE users, Unfortunately we are still working on this BIOS but, at this time we are being instructed to RMA the card if you want the variable speed fan. There is nothing wrong with the card and we will happily support your double lifetime warranty. Please contact our support team at any time if you have any questions.

So the new cards of the same type DO have a variable speed fan, even though they operate on the same bios?
Anyways, which bios update did we have to try again?
xfxsupport
11-01-2006, 12:22 AM
The only BIOS that was not adjusting the fan speed was localized to the UDE models only. The other BIOS updates are available here: http://www.bjorn3d.com/pafile/index.php?act=category&id=5 . Please be careful in selecting your BIOS as the wrong BIOS can affect the performance of the card.

Right, so, let's recap:
if you have a UDE, just sit tight and wait for the new BIOS, if you don't have a UDE, upgrade your BIOS and if it doesn't work, RMA your card. Right?
But! UDE-users can also RMA their card to get the variable fan speeds nonetheless.
If I got this all right: how does RMA work, and how long does it take (more or less)? Or can't you, like, send me a good card, so I can send the bad card back when I can swap them?
xfxsupport

If you have the UDE model any version other then the A.1 no bios will allow the fan to slow down. In that case please start a support ticket at our website www.xfxforce.com and we can issue an RMA to exchange it. The RMA process usually takes about a week and a half to two weeks.

I went to the xfxforce site and tried to create a ticket 3 times but they seem to be having problems with the system as it keeps telling me No Ticket Found when I try to submit the message.
I'd like to send my card in for a bios update to get rid of the noisy fan.

Hi, myfirst post here.
I have a UDER card (7900 Extreme Edition, 520 Mhz), original BIOS was...12, received the ...14. I have been receiving very good help thru the XFX Helpdesk, received a new BIOS, but until i fully erased all of my nvidia drivers and stuff, i didn't get the Core and Mem speed sliders to work well!
Now i'm testing.
Any other UDER user got a real solution? :)

Yeah, buy a EVGA brand card.
Ever since i've had problems with my card which is the same as yours, i've noticed there are quite alot of problems that people have reported.
depending on how long you've owned the card for, it might be easier to return it for a refund or sell it and buy an EVGA 7900GT.
Atleast with an EVGA brand card you can change the cooler to something that better suits you without voiding your warranty. putting something like a arctic cooler onto a EVGA card should mean quieter cooling.
Also, it wouldnr surprise me if you now have no warranty since your card is now had a bios update that is different from the factory models. I say this because it is changing the basic procedure of how the card operates according to XFX standards so be very careful with what you do with a XFX card.
otherwise, buy some good ear phones to try and blockout the noise.
