psu for xfx gts250
after my hiper 425watt burned out last week i am looking for a replacement psu thats capable of running the xfx gts250 and the following components
intel pentium D 915 2.8ghz
2gb ddr2 ram ( 4 x dimms )
320gb sata hdd
2 x 80mm fans
dvdrw drive lightscribe
i have seen loads of possible psu,s however i have narrowed it down to three.....these are
1) Coolermaster 460W eXtreme Power Plus PSU ( http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150596 )
2) Arctic Power 700W PSU - With PCI-E, 4x SATA, 20+4, ATX12V, 8pin +12V ( http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124927 )
3) 500w iCute Modular ATX Dual VGA Power Supply ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=221195 )
if i knew more about the icute psu i would opt for that due to its modular set-up however since i have never heard of them i am dubious about buying it,i know it has dual +12v rails with 20A on each however on closer inspection the 500watt isnt the rated power, its only the peak power and the rated wattage is actually only 400watt.....duff
so that leaves me with two....the arctic power psu is another which i have no experience with, however from reviews it seems pretty solid , it has 4 x sata connectors and a single pci-express connector which is ideal for me,i have checked out their website ( http://www.compucase-hec.co.uk/psu_a...00-600-700.htm ) which informs me it has dual +12v rails with 22A on each, with 38A on the +5v and 30A on the +3.3v,and it also supports the following features :
OVP (Over-Voltage Protection)
UVP (Under-Voltage Protection)
OPP (Over-Power Protection)
UPP (Short-Circuit Protection)
and then theres the Coolermaster 460W eXtreme Power Plus PSU ,this is the obvious choice for reliability however with just 460watts would this be enough for all my components
i have run the asus power supply calculator and it stated i require around 280watts ,so with that in mind i should be fine, however as we all know theres more to powering a pc than just watts, theres the +12v rail(s) and also the +5v and +3.3v....however the coolermaster has dual +12v rails with 18A on each rail
so what would you go for.......i would love to go for the arctic power 700w but would this be ok.....?
finally i spoke to a rep at "xfx" who told me they use "colours-it" psu,s on their testbays and theres a 750watt colours-it psu for only £32 ,however would this be worth buying....it has dual +12v rails with 20A on each and with a recommendation from xfx i am tempted
any advice will be much appreciated
I curious as to why XFX would use another companies PSu's when they make thair own. I have one in my system...
as for your other chioces the PSU calc's are pretty accurate. My advice is stic with the brand name. I can't even find a website for those arctic power PSU's only some off the wall sites that sell them.
What black said, use only name brand PSU's or else you risk losing hardware to a faulty PSU.
I would suggest anything from Thermaltake, Coolermaster, Antec, OCZ, or Corsair in the 550w range +. Make sure it is at least 80% Bronze meaning it can do that wattage continuous.
A good example would be this PSU here, which would power your system and more.
