Dead Transmission? Odd way of dying if so....
So after the last issue I had with my transmission had been resolved, I'm going to check the solenoids first. This issue seems to be entirely new and one I haven't even read about anywhere.
On my way to work this morning after getting off the freeway, my car's RPMs shot straight up. I wasn't purposely revving my car or anything, I was just driving normal keeping it 45MPH on the street. It's as if the transmission disengaged gears while driving. Then when I got to a red light and tried to accelerate the transmission again didn't seem to engage the gears.
As for When the gear re-engaged I didn't get that "kick" I got before when the first transmission went out or when the solenoid broke. There was no kick. It's was as if the transmission slowly re-engaged and the "kick" never happened.
Also, I did hear a slight hissing sound whenever I would give the engine some gas, so this makes me think that there is a vacuum leak somewhere. Are there any hoses that could affect the shifting mechanism of our cars?
During this whole time that the transmission wasn't engaging or having trouble staying engaged, the D4 was never blinking. Isn't the D4 light supposed to be blinking whenever there is a severe transmission related issue? Or is this just not "severe enough" to make it blink?
When I did get to work, I used my OBD II scanner (a cheap one) and it gave me the following codes and descriptions:
P0763 - Solenoid
P0740 - Torque Converter
P1491 - (No description, but I know this is the EGR valve)
"Undefined" - (I know I need a high end scanner to get me this value)
For P0763 and P0740 the CEL thread just says "A/T Issue", so that doesn't help much.
When I pulled up to my work, I shut the car off for about 5min. and told my friend. He asked to see it and then everything was working perfectly fine. I have no idea why this was the case.
With all of this, do you guys think that this could be a torque converter issue, a solenoid issue, a vacuum leak, or that my transmission is just completely gone? I really hope it's just another solenoid or something else simple that could easily get fixed and not something that requires lots of time and money.
If it's a new/rebuild tranny job I'm going to need, it's going to suck cuz I was saving up for a 6spd manual swap! Now, what I have saved up will go straight to the new/rebuild trans job

in your trans is a filter. if it clogs the trans can't get fluid, and will act in a manner similar to what you describe. the torque converter can't do it's job, and the selinoids may stick, if you let it sit the stuff drops off the filter, and the trans "acts normal" till it clogs again. fuel filters also do this. I would drop the pan, and change the filter, put new fluid in with a bottle of Lucas trans additive. if nothing else this is alot cheaper than replacing a trans.
and yes alot of trannies have a vacume line that runs a shift modulator. depends on what model trans you have. i know they were still in use till the mid '90's, after that I cannot say, but it will be somewhere on the body of the trans where it can be serviced without removing the trans. (at least all the ones i've seen were)
Just read your "other" post. if you have been doing the trans fluid on schedule then scratch the cloged filter idea.
if you have a box of tools and a junk yard handy the do the swap yourself and save a few bucks. i did it with a ford ranger after the 3rd trans went and saved a butt-load of cash compared to getting the auto rebuilt.Last edited by Blacksmith1; 05-12-2011 at 05:48 PM.

My car is a 2000 v6 Honda Accord. The transmission used in the 1998 - 2002 v6 automatic Honda Accord is the B7XA. Yes, there is a filter in my transmission, but in order to get to it, you have to remove the entire transmission. Why Honda designed this transmission like this is beyond many of us in the 6GA community. This transmission does not have an ATF pan, it only has an ATF drain bolt. The fluid is changed out pretty much the same way as doing an oil change.
The distance between ATF changes is recommended by Honda to be done between 35k to 45k miles but many people say to have it done every 15k to 25k miles. I had done mine with the Honda recommendation and did the first change at 40k miles after the rebuild of my transmission and was intending on doing another ATF change within the next month or two as I was pretty much already at the 40k mile mark again.
If I need to have my transmission rebuilt, I plan on having an external filter added as well as an external cooler in order to extend the life of the next transmission. It'll add about $200 - $350 to the rebuild cost to have those two items added, but it'll greatly extend the life of the next transmission.
As for the junkyard idea, I know it would save me money and all, but I don't have the advanced mechanical know-how on how to do such a large job myself. And even if I did have the know-how, I don't have all the proper tools to do so. IMO though, 4yrs and 80k miles out of this transmission was a pretty good run. Especially for how hard I drive my car, lol.

I was getting 6-8 months out of my trannies but i was working them harder than they were designed for,(my trans guy cut his one year warrenty down to 6 months when I took the truck in to let them change the 2nd out, cause he saw what I hauled on a daily basis) and the A4LD from ford was probably the worst tranmission ever installed in a vehicle.

Are those honda's coil on plug. If they are maybe if your super lucky but wouldn't hurt to try move the one nearest the computer and swap it with one on the other side of the engine. On my Lincoln LS transmission had an identical issue and it turned out to be RFI from a bad coil.

I had it towed yesterday to my transmission mechanic. Within an hour he had it disengaged from the engine ready to have it pulled out of the car. He says it's the torque converter for sure that went out just by looking at it. He'll let me know later today what else needs replacement once he has it taken apart. I'd like him to replace the clutch packs while he has it apart since those are what typically wear out the fastest on this transmission. I also want him to add an external filter and external cooler if at all possible.

Weird.. Wonder what could break on a torque convertor? Only thing I could imagine would be the freewheel clutch in there..
