Default NVIDIA or ATI for HTPC

    GT 240 (ddr3) vs 5770 (DDR5)

    • GT 240 on a frankenstein HTPC (HP branded Asus Micro ATX mobo, 8 GB DDR2, E6300, WIN7 64bit).

    • 5770 on P5Q PRO TURBO, 8 GB Corsair DDR2, Q9550.

I ask only because I am putting an OCZ 60 GB Vertex 2 SSD into the HTPC. So, since I will be doing some upgrading, might as well make a wholesale change - if need be.

    No gaming on the HTPC

if you won't be gaming, use which ever one has the lower gaming performance. both of those cards should be able to handle the HTPC stuff no problem.
The path to universal understanding starts here: Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

if your not gaming then either one will be fine. If you might do some light gaming go with the 5770. if power consumption is your big worry then go with the 240

AMD is the best for HTPC, Nvidia does not properly do the overscanning/underscanning. AMD keeps the resolution/ratio in tact when you need to size the screen to the HDTV. Nvidia actually manipulates the resolution/ratio when you need to fit the screen to the HDTV.

Thanks for the input. Since the OCZ has not show yet, I have been doing some "expereee-mentin'" (remeber, I am from Ohio). Using a video I created that played flawlessly through the 240 setup and my ever critical wife (critical in a good way :-0) I have mixed and matched parts and contected and played the video on two TV's - a DLP and an LCD.

    Two things standout:
    1. The 240's colors seem a bit more true without any intervention by me than the 5770.
    2. The 5770 was about 10 times easier to scale on each of the TV's.

I think with the proper assistance, I can adjust the 5770's colors - I am color blind.

As for now, I have an equal number of +'s and -'s for each card. Most likely, the deciding factor will be the heat. The Pro Turbo combined with the Q9550 kicks off a bit more heat than I would like. Oddly enough though, the 5770 has the same heat output as the 240 regardless of the mobo/cpu combination used.

    Killabyte will be next.

    Thanks again for the assistance.

    Paul

In the back of my head is this: The Pro Turbo, Q9550, 5770 was my "old" video editing machine. It would be nice to have a viable backup incase Giga-Bjorn goes down. Can't really do that with it is serving as an HTPC.

Any of the two will be just fine. Like said, if you plan on gaming on your HTPC, then IMHO go with the 5770. Otherwise, go with the GT240 or...keep the GT240 for another machine and use the onboard video card, as long as it supports HDMI. That's what I'm doing on my HTPC, as the onboard video card has HDMI output and easily handles all video formats including MKV files with 1080p resolution.

Got it all put back together. Power usage was the final determining factor plus I feel more comfortable having the 5770 being used by my kids rather then the 240. The 5770 was faster at basic video rendering than the 240 (wma, mpeg2 & 4, divx, etc.)

Sorry, this was just a play on the other such messages, kind of like Joshua did on his last post. Well, I did post from my DEFY, and apparently the smiley wasn't enough of a hint, so I apologise if I caused any inconvenience, and will try to mend my ways.
