Phenom II X1090T fan making tons of noise
I just installed my new Phenom II X6 1090T. It's the first CPU I installed in a while. Perhaps the last one was the Celeron 300A, and that came on a card. Anyway, seemed simple enough, especially after watching a YouTube video (and the start of another which luckily reminded me to upgrade the BIOS). Of course, I have no idea if I did everything correctly, but the PC at least works.
Problem is the fan noise. It's just terrible. I ran Overdrive and it says that FAN0, which I guess is the CPU fan, is running at around 5400rpm. Temperature is 51C for that fan (room temperature is 32C). CPU usage is at around 17%, which isn't idle, but it's not even close to load. Cool & Quiet is enabled.
So the first question is, did I do anything wrong? Did I mess up the thermal paste by moving it, dust got in the way, that kind of thing. I mean, is it normal temperature to be 19C over room temp with a slight load?
Second is, is it possible to undervolt the non-load voltage? I underclocked and undervolted in Overdrive, but that only reduces the voltage when the cores are at max. Most of the time they're at 2400MHz and voltage goes to 1.325, which is more than I set.
It's a real pity that I can't just put the old CPU back in, because I'll need to reapply thermal past which I don't have.
Anyway I guess I'll start looking for aftermarket coolers. Never used them, but this noise is completely driving me nuts.

At full rev stock amd fans tend to be a bit noisey. but 5400 about right for rpm. as for the noise I can't hear your fan to tell you if it's louder than it should be.

Any fan, running at 100% makes a bit of noise, more so GPU and CPU fans. Some boards can automatically adjust CPU fan speeds as needed. As far as the temps..for a cpu it depends on your cpu. my Athlon X2 4600+ runs at about that, under 100% load. Maybe that is a bit high if the CPU doesn't have much load.

My room is 22c my cpu at idle is 34-35c. that's with the system sitting with only IE running. that's a 12-13 c difference and my old aluminum only cooler ran hotter. your room is hot, the system is going to run hot. a better HSF will help but cooling the room it's in will help more.

I think I'll order a low end cooler, probably the CoolerMaster Hyper TX3, which is in stock at ZigZag2000. If I had an idea of the noise I would have ordered a cooler from Amazon when I ordered the CPU, and would have had more choice and lower prices. Still, hopefully even a low end cooler will be better than the stock cooler.
I just didn't imagine another cooler would be needed because the Phenom II 710's cooler was a lot quieter.
Edit: Might go for another cooler. There are local stores so would depend on what's in stock. I really want to get this replaced quickly.Last edited by ET3D; 07-23-2011 at 10:35 AM.

I agree with Black, you may want to drop your ambient temps by a lot. if your ambient going to be that high I suggest you get a really good cooler.
