Post Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB (ST3000DM001)

Nice drive, but requires the right MB to get the full 3TB and was priced a bit high to begin with for a Seagate. Now that the flood happened in Thailand, the prices will be even higher for a while.

I had my eye on a Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2TB drive I saw at Newegg on email subscriber promo for $100 ($120 regular price). Then the flood jacked the price up to $300! Shoulda bought 1 or 2 of them I think. The 7K3000 2TB is capable of 158 Mb/s write speed.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. SSD prices look much better in comparison now though...

LOL, too bad it's just an illusion due to the temp high HD prices though.

That said, been eyeballing the Vertex 3 SATA III 120GB SSDs lately. Newegg has em for $170 on MIR right now. Blazing fast compared to 158Mb/s, but then you aren't getting a whole 2TBs worth of capacity.

mechanical drive price probably would come down in a month or so after the supply has gone up. It's a simple supply and demand now with the flood. Get an SSD and pair tha with smaller mechanical drive is the way to go.

BTW that Vertex 3 SATA III 120GB price is $170, had to correct it. Why a smaller mech drive? There's 2TB drives now that can write at 158Mb/s, and I don't see any smaller ones faster than that. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 is the one I'm considering. Newegg had them on email subscriber promo for $100 just before the flood hit.
