Haven't used it, but knowing what it is I would say just get an SSD for your OS drive instead.

I didn't read any over the moon reviews of the technology. I have an SSD for OS and one for programs right now.

Then this really isn't for you. The cache technology takes frequently used programs from a HDD and caches them on an SSD to speed up loading.

Right. So if you're already using an SSD.... not gonna make any difference.

In general, I don't think it's really a smart investment. Sure, you get the boost, but you have to get a board w/ the right chipset. That limits you. Also, for a few bucks more you can just get an SSD.

The cheapest SSDs on Newegg right now are a few 32GB ones. They cost $50.

With $25-35 extra (and without any limitations) and a little patience you can grab a 120GB, full-scale SSD on nice sale. I've seen two SSD deals for that price over the past month or so. One Samsung 830 and one Corsair Force GT. So they aren't shabby SSDs either.

One discussion I followed dealt with the lifespan of the SSD being shortened. Two camps: H**L NO and H**L YES. A bit of flaming going on. Either way, I will steer clear of this one.

The SSD with the Smart Response lost lifespan?

I bet that's true - if it's being used as a cache, a lot of read/write is going on. That'll obviously wear on it and it'll probably lose performance.

Intel SRT is usually used with small SSDs, such as 20GB-64GB SSDs, just because it would be hard to put an OS on such small SSD, it will just cache the most used files onto the SSD over time and speed up loading times. But that's about it. If you have a 128GB or higher SSD, I would just install the OS onto the SSD along with the programs and go from there.

Really? People use 64GB for SRT? Seems dumb... just use mechanical for programs and you'll still get the lightning startup (which is the main motivator for me).

Eh, I don't really care much about the startup performance. I like my applications to load quick, which is why I have both the OS and applications on the SSD, and everything else on a HDD.

IMO SSD caching is the way to go. It generally provides speeds on par with pure SSD for most things, and is cheaper. It's perhaps not the best for enthusiasts, but just speeding up boot times and loading it's a good thing, and if you have a lot of games installed it's probably a better solution to making them load more quickly, since with a pure SSD solution you'd either have to spend a lot on SSD disk space or juggle the games so that the active ones are on the SSD.

Caching to an SSD from an SSD is just moot.

I know, I know, it makes no sense but I have to try it just once. It’s like a big red button that says, “Don’t Push”. I just have to, to see what happens.

The setup will be the 90GB Callisto and one 2TB Caviar.

That makes a bit more sense, but then you would have better performance and less wear on the SSD as a boot drive lol. But I get you. I'm about ready to drop a dual core in my 98 box....just cause.
