OCZ Vertex 2 problems
Hi,
I am thinking my Vertex 2 needs to be sent back to OCZ, but in case I've overlooked something, I'm just asking for your advice.
Basicly yesterday I had problems with the laptop it was in where it would totally freeze after 30-60seconds of being in Windows. I tried to load up SSD Life and it said there were no SSDs connected (in those 30-60 seconds) and the same occured with OCZ Toolbox. Now that was the only drive in the laptop.
Today I put it in my desktop also running on a SSD and at first it was being detected, OCZ Toolbox said it was running on f/w 1.33 (which I knew, but couldn't update without removing the drive from the laptop) and after trying to update the f/w, the drive dissapeared never to appear again after 1 full shutdown and 1 reboot. The SSD is about 18 months old, is there anything I have overlooked ?
I don't quite remember in details, but I know I always made sure it was around or less than 60% full.

I think if you check OCZ forums you will see a fix for this. I had the same problem. After a certian time of on hours the SSD randomly shuts down. Update your firmware and it should be fine.

Same deal with mine but even after updating the firmware and trying it in two different systems, I had to RMA the thing. Now, the replacement is running beautifully but for about 2 weeks, when the drive was getting really flakey, I would get random restarts, black screens, error messages saying SP1 was not installed, etc.
Do some Googling and you will come across other people with the same issues. That being said, the Vertex originally crapped out in one of my HTPC’s. I had a Corsair drive do the exact same thing in a different HTPC. Made me think that there was something up with Sandforce but I did not pursue it much – since the replacements worked great.BBQASUS P8Z68-V PRO; i7 2600k @ 4.1GHz; Kingston HyperX 16 GB @ 1866; Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe 90GB SSD with Win7 Home Premium 64bit; OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5" SSD 60GB - Programs; 2 WD 2 TB Caviar Green RAID1; WD 2 TB Cavier Green in external USB3 case;EVGA FTW 670 GTX; Acer 22 inch Widescreen; PSU: Ultra 4x 1050

My SSD in my desktop is running fine, but now I am doing a RMA with the faulty one which was in a laptop. Hopefully my remaining one will stay strong and my replacement will prove to be stable for quite a while.

Before sending the drive for RMA , do insert the faulty drive in your desktop with another HDD set as your Boot Drive & put your HDDs into IDE mode. You can do that from your BIOS setup. Then power on the system , boot from the other HDD which is working fine & check if the faulty one is getting detected by SSD Toolbox.Download the latest OCZ Toolbox if you have not already. If the faulty drive is not getting detected by OCZ SSD Toolbox even in the IDE mode , then you will need RMA if you have tried other Sata and/or Power cables already. But if the drive gets detected by the software , then try updating it to it's latest Firmware & see if that helps.
Let us know what happened.Best of luck. I never had any problem with two of my OCZs so far.I always update the FW of the SSD before formatting or putting anything onto it.
Make sure you boot from another HDD which is working fine & put your HDDs into IDE mode from your BIOS setup before entering into Windows. And if you have success in updating the FW , make sure you perform a Secure Erase from the SSD Toolbox before formatting the drive or putting anything on it.Last edited by sushrukh; 12-28-2012 at 09:36 AM.
