Dallas County is bad. Ft Worth isn't any better (the city) but Tarrant County (right next to Dallas County) where Ft Worth resides has some good areas. For instance where I live is a pretty decent area and I can walk to the store or gas station without fear of being robbed or shot. There is nowhere in Dallas County I would feel safe. Only problem with here is we are stuck with TW or ATT Uverse. Charter is on the west side of Ft Worth and in rich areas north of here. There is FiOS literally 5 minutes down the road from me in Irving which is Dallas County. There is also FiOS in a small area around the Verizon HQ but homes in that area start at 350k. I don't make that kind of money.

I would LOVE to get charter also, but I live in an area where it's TWC only for cable internet... I wonder if charter and TWC have some sort of turf war or something...

I know for a fact they do here, as ATT and Verizon also do. Tarrant county is ATT, Dallas county is Verizon. TW is in all areas but not in the areas Charter is in.

If I had my own ISP, and some serious capital to back me up, I would offer $1/Mbps. You want 20 Mbps, it will be $20. You want 50 Mbps, $50. That simple. The cost of your Internet speed is one big BOHICa.

I won't pretend to know all the engineering behind the "internets" but why is the US so far behind other countries in terms of speed, caps etc?

Because our country is rather large and over all pretty much all of the land is populated in some form. It just costs way too much to lay copper and fiber for higher speed in internet in real rural areas. As it stands, most people even in the DFW area are limited to cable or DSL.
