This doesn't require owning Windows 8. I used the form before I bought Windows 8 and got a key. Haven't tried using it yet (haven't installed 8 yet even), but I think it's safe to simply use this form even if you just happen to think you'll own Windows 8 one day. (Hopefully they won't disable applying the key after some time.)

It's just an upgrade key from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8 Pro Media Center.Sure you can get a key before you bought Windows 8 but this is NOT the key to install Windows 8.Only to upgrade an already installed Windows 8 Pro OS.You can't use this key to install a fresh Windows 8.Microsoft is allowing everyone ( regardless of what OS they have ) to generate the key but you can only use the key to upgrade to Windows 8 Media Center from an already installed copy of Windows 8 Pro.
