It is official now that the upcoming Windows Blue will be called Windows 8.1. In addition, according to the official Windows Blogging site, the upcoming version of Windows will be free update to Windows 8. No offical time has been announced as to when the final update will be available but the public preview is expected to be out starting June 26.
There are rumors floating around the web saying that the next version of Windows will bring back the old-school Start Menu button and the ability to boot directly to the desktop as oppose to the Metro UI. In addition, no official information on as to what other enhancements or new software will be included with the Windows 8.1. Nonetheless, it is good to see at least MS will not ask for more cash for the update.
Windows 8 has received some mixed feedback. Some users have returned to the Windows 7 because of the radical change in the UI. Maybe offering the option to switch between the two interface would appease some users and help people to ease into the new OS.

NVIDIA’s latest GeForce 320.14 beta driver boosts the performance of single-GPU and SLI in the Metro: Last Night by up to 10%. If you just grabbed the latest game off STEAM, be sure to also update to the beta driver for best performance.
The 320.14 beta also includes all of the performance optimizations and SLI profiles found in the recent 320.00 beta release, improving performance and compatibility in games such as Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Dead Island: Riptide, Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, GRID 2, Remember Me, Natural Selection 2, Resident Evil 6, Tomb Raider, and TrackMania² Canyon.

One of our favorite mini-ITX gaming case is the Bitfenix Prodigy that we have reviewed. The Prodigy is slightly larger than your typical mini-ITX case but it is extremely versatile. It can accommodate large graphic cards up to 320mm in length, meaning that you can install the NVIDIA GTX Titan or the AMD Radeon HD 7990 wihout any issue for a powerful little gaming machine. The case also has plenty of room for up to five 3.5” HDD or 2.5” SSD and can accomodate standard ATX power supply. While we reviewed the white model, Bitfenix has recently launched two new models joining the family: Green and Blue.

It is no surprise that the biggest focus on the upcoming Haswell processor would be the GPU performance. Intel is steadily improving upon its GPU performance as we have seen going from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge, so we should expect the Haswell to continue with such trend. We still have a wait a few more weeks until we get to see just how Haswell performs but we got a little tidbits of information on the upcoming processor’s GPU.
Intel has officially announced that the upcoming processor’s GPU will have a brand of its own: Iris graphics and Iris Pro graphics. The highest performing GPU on Haswell, the GT3e (with e denotes the embedded DRAM), will carry the branding Iris Pro graphics 5200 while the Iris graphics will be given to GT3 variant. The current Intel HD graphic branding will still remain for the GT1 and GT2 variant, which will carry the HD 4000 numbering system.

QNAP latest home NAS series, the TS-x21 and the TS-x20, uses Marvell CPU. While the former has the CPU is clocked at 2.0GHz and comes with 1GB of DDR3, the latter is clocked at 1.6GHz with 512 MB of DDR3 memory. Both models will feature QNAP’s latest operating system QTS 4.0 that adds support for multi-windows operation. The new OS also adds support for cross-device file synchronization, several smart mobile aps, and more. Both series will have 1-bay, 2-bay, or 4-bay units available where the the models with multiple bays will support hot-swap and the 4-bay unit will come with dual Gigabit ethernet while the 2 and the 1 bay model will come with a single Gigabit ethernet.
The new revamped interface looks very clean and and a depart from traditional folder UI that we have seen from QNAP. It is icon based that mimics what we seen on the tablets. It looks polished and much more forward looking. We should expect some older models will get the software update a bit later.

Noctua is offering an alternatively mounting option for the NH-L9a cooler. The new mounting assembly does not require a backplate, making it much easier to use on motherboards with components underneath the CPU area. While the original SecuFirm2 mounting system that came with the NH-L9a complies with AMD specification guideline, some mini-ITX motherboards may have an issue with the cooler due to its non-standard configuration. Thus, Noctua designed a new mounting system to accommodate the growing trend of mini-ITX motherboards.
We had reviewed the Noctua NH-L9a and we did not have any issue with the cooler on our Zotac motherboard. It appears that the Asrock FM2A75M-ITX or the FM2A85X-ITX are not compatible with the SecuFirm2 mounting system but the new redesigned mounting system should work without any issue.
As always, Noctua provides these mounting system free of charge for any users who owned the NH-L9a cooler. All you got to do is provide your proof of purchase and they will ship it to you for free. In addition, the new mounting system will also be included from now on in the retail box ready to be used out of the box.
