Gigabyte F2A88XN-WIFI: Mini-ITX Board for Kaveri (FM2+)

F2A88XN-WIFI

Gigabyte’s F2A85XN-WIFI was one of the best mini-ITX board for the FM2 socket. With the release of the Kaveri (FM2+) APU, Gigabyte has updated their mini-ITX board with the latest A88X chipset. With the F2A88XN-WIFI, Gigabyte essentially retained the same overall design and the layout as the older board except it has swapped out the FM2 socket for the FM2+ so it will support AMD Kaveri and it has added support for 802.11ac. So if you are aiming to build a mini-ITX system with the latest AMD APU, you would probably want to check out this review for more information as to what the board has to offer. Board Layout    Visually, it would be hard to tell F2A88XN-WIFI apart from its younger sibling F2A85XN-WIFI as both boards sports exactly same layout to a T. If it were not for the different color CPU socket (black for the A88X and white ... Read More »

AMD Roadmap through 2016+ includes K12, a new x86 and ARM cores

AMD_20140505.pdf_Page_23

AMD hosted a “Core Innovation Update” conference today where we get a hint of what is coming for the company in the next couple of years. AMD’s future roadmap will still be focusing what it has done well in the past with x86, ie desktop, laptop, and servers. However, the company also will put a greater emphasize on the ARM architecture as it attacks in growth market through its “ambidextrous strategy”. The desktop market is shrinking which means the revenue from the X86 is also not as good as it used to be. According to AMD’s internal estimates, the revenue share for the x86 will continue to decline (although at slower rate) in the next few years. At the same time, the revenue from ARM is growing and is expecting to grow. While Intel has renew a push for the x86 on the desktop, AMD’s road map for the future ... Read More »

Sapphire R9 280X VaporX Graphics Card

feature

Sapphire Radeon R9-280X VaporX Sapphire as we all know is AMDs premier partner so we always see cool stuff coming from them, but honestly we had already seen a VaporX 280X so we have all simply been waiting for what would come next such as the much rumored 295X or another 290X iteration. To my surprise I got hands on with a newer VaporX 280X model card which is actually a whole new configuration and looks very much like the Toxic model we looked at some time ago now sporting the Tri-X cooler. However this card carries blue hints instead of the orange from the Toxic model which actually looks really good in my opinion. Add to this the fact that the Tri-X cooler now also employs Sapphires signature Vapor Chamber design which is what the VaporX naming is all about. The Vapor Chamber from previous testing always helps pull ... Read More »

Sapphire R7 240 Dual HDMI Graphics Card

Feature

Sapphire Radeon R7-240 Dual HDMI Sapphire being the premier partner for AMD its only natural that they offer every one of AMDs offerings and maybe even some special tweaks to the lower end or more mainstream models available. The card we are reviewing today happens to be one of those cards which is the R7-240 which is destined to be something like a stock replacement for an off the shelf PC. Sapphire did something pretty interesting here by equipping the card with dual HDMI connectors vs the standard connection array. Key Features Dual HDMI and Dual Audio Sapphire supports top end 7.1 audio via the HDMI outputs on the R7-240 card, but what is very cool is that during my testing due to running dual HDMI displays with speakers I could actually play two different audio sources or videos from the single card and each with its own audio stream. ... AMD demonstrates full support for DX12 at GDC

As many expected Microsoft showed off the next version of DirectX, DX12, at this years GDC. The new version offers the developers to program even close to the “metall” allowing them to squeeze out even more performance for their games. Among the companies pledging support for DX12 was not only NVidia but also AMD. This is of course not surprising since it would be odd for them not to support a DX-version but to some extend it is interesting to see them pledge full support and talking warmly about DX12 as it is doing stuff their own Mantle-API is supposed to do. Still, the next version of DX12 is not supposed to arrive until some time 2015 so there is plenty of time for the AMD Mantle API to gain acceptance and usage.  SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Mar. 2014 — AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced support for Microsoft® and its revamped graphics application programming interface, DirectX® ... MSI Radeon R9 290X Gaming

feature

MSI Radeon R9-290X Gaming We have seen many MSI custom PCB or fully custom PCB or even just custom cooled cards and they always impress with some very nice temps along with looking pretty awesome as well. The gaming series carries the Red/Black theme with a custom Twin Frozr model cooler and offers usually a nice overclock with some really good gaming performance to offer some amazing framerates for the end-user. The card we have today needs no introduction as the R9-290X from AMD made a big splash when it entered the market although not all of the noise was good as users quickly found that the reference cards were plagued with massive heat from a simply inadequate cooler design. Well that being the case we do know that the Twin Frozr cooler design does very well at removing heat so the 290X is naturally a perfect candidate for testing ... Read More »

Zotax Zbox Nano AQ01 Plus

zbox_featured

While Zotac maybe is most knows for their graphics cards they also are specialized on small motherboards and small desktop systems. Today we are reviewing one of those tiny small desktop PC’s: the Zotax Zbox Nano AQ01 Plus. This is a very small PC that even comes with a VESA-mount so it can be attached to a TV ore monitor and be out of sight. It has a Quad-core AMD “Kabini” APU, the A4-5000 while a Radeon HD 8330 provides us with the graphics muscles. This is not a gaming machine, even though the GPU should benefit from the Mantle API, but promises to work well as either a media PC, a kitchen PC or even a bedroom PC. Does it have what it takes to compete with tables and other tiny PC’s? Continue to read to find out. THE FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS As we mentioned in the introduction this ... Read More »

Powercolor Radeon R9-290X

Feature

Powercolor Radeon R9-290X OC Powercolor has been a long time AMD partner and like the Devil card we looked at recently they have made a name for themselves with many special edition including high end liquid cooled cards. Today I have their OC version of the 290X which has a small bump to the boost clock of the card which should net us some nice performance, but first things first. As you know the 290X launched a little while ago and unfortunately AMD had a very strict list of places they sent cards to, well this means that this is a bit behind what you may have already read on the card but since the card is already launched it also means I get to spend a bit more time with it rather than rushing to meet an NDA date. With that I would like to note that there will ... Read More »

Powercolor Radeon R9-270X Devil

Feature

Powercolor Radeon R9-270X Devil Powercolor is one of the AMD partners that you see from time to time and they are really known for such designs as the Devil series cards which really shot them into the limelight for the AMD camp about a year or so back now. Well today we have in hand a newer “Devil” based model in the R9-270X Devil. The Devil edition is always known as the extreme performance variant and this is no exception with the telltale triple fan cooler, red/black cladding and full backplate carrying the design to the upper echelon in the looks department and the performance department is no slouch either. The R9-270X comes in at a retail price of $239.99 directly from Newegg at the time of this writing. this places it at the very top of the price stack for the 270X models which can range from around $199 ... AMD 2014 Mobile Product: Kaveri, Beema, and Mullins

AMD_Logo

AMD is releasing bits of information regarding to the upcoming products. First the company set the launch date for the upcoming Kaveri desktop APU on January 14, 2014. Now, we got more information regarding to the plan for the upcoming mobile products.  In 2014, AMD’s plan is essentially the same as 2013 where the company is focusing on the performance tablets, 2-in-1 systems, convertibles, and notebooks. AMD is planned to launch three APUs for the mobile products: “Kaveri”, “Beema” and “Mullins”. First, the Beema will replace the Kabini that is aimed for the low power and entry level notebooks. The Mullins will replace the Temash for the ultra-low power tablets, 2-1 system and fanless notebooks. The Kaveri will replace the Richland for the performance notebooks and ultrabooks. The main focus of these APUs will be lower power consumption and delivers a good performance per watt ratio.  While AMD is not ready to ... Read More »

AMD Kaveri Will Launch on January 14, 2014

AMD_Logo

Today at the APU13, AMD has officially put a date on the availability of the Kaveri APU. The initial availability is set for January 14th, 2014, which is right after CES. AMD is expected to have more detail at CES 2014. The initial launch will be the desktop chip with the notebook and others (servers, embedded, etc) following sometimes in 2014. This is different than what AMD has done in the past with the Trinity and the Richland APU.  While AMD has not release much information about Kaveri. We know that it will work on FM2+ socket. Kaveri will bring many features such as heterogeneous queuing (hQ) and heterogeneous uniform memory access (hUMA). In addition, since Kaveri will have the GCN based GPU, it will feature many of the latest technology that is also found on the current generation of the AMD R series GPU. The APU will support AMD ... AMD Announced Unified SDK 2.9 and Media SDK 1.0

AMD_Logo

The upcoming “Kaveri” APU is one of the most anticipated product from AMD as it finally brings exciting new technology such as heterogenous queing (hQ) and heterogenous uniform memory access (hUMA). Today at the AMD developer conference, the APU13, AMD has announced a new unified SDK that is aimed to help developers to take advantage of the upcoming chip’s new technology. Kaveri is going to be a very big thing for AMD and is going to a very exciting product. With Kaveri, AMD is going to bring both the CPU and the GPU to equal footing (and even possibly other processors in the future). In order for it to succeed, software need to be optimize to take advantage of chip, specially the GPU power inside the chip.  The new APP SDK 2.9 adds support for the latest APU and CPU. HIS R9 280X IceQX2 Turbo

his280x_top

HIS is one of the companies that have been partner with AMD for a long time and always released new interesting cards as new GPU’s are released. With the release of the new fall-GPU’s from AMD we get a full spread of products and today we are testing the HIS R9 280X IceQ2 Turbo card. As the name implies this is a card that not only comes with the latest version of HIS special IceQ-cooler but also is pre-overclocked from the box.  The R9 280X uses the Tahiti GPU and is basically a HD7970 GHz edition card with a new name. With 3 GB memory though it has more headroom for higher resolutions and that for a price around $300. Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti – Nvidia takes GK110 to the Next Level

feature

Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti Nvidia launched the 700 series and really took the market by storm with the capability to offer exceptional power savings and super strong performance per watt, along with cool running cards which makes for a great gaming package. However nothing ever is safe for very long and with that AMD showed off their new R series of cards to compete. Unfortunately for AMD, almost all of the models in the R series were actually existing chips with a new name. The exception was the flagship product–the R9-290X. The R9-290X takes the TITAN head on, and the price point is a real killer for the gaming market, but this kind of value does not come without compromises. Unfortunately, these come in the form of 92-95C loaded temps and noise which can be akin to a vacuum cleaner inside your chassis. But even with these issues this ... Read More »

AMD Introduces heterogeneous Queuing (hQ)

Heterogeneous Queuing Presentation_Page_10

AMD today brings the latest implementation of the heterogeneous computing with the introduction of the heterogeneous queuing (hQ). As you may recall, AMD founded the Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) Foundation with other chipmakers and industry giants such as ARM, Qualcomm, and Samsung to promote a great utilization of various computing processors such as CPU, GPU, DSP and others . Sapphire Radeon R9-280X Toxic

Sapphire Radeon R9-280X Toxic Sapphire Has been AMDs premier partner for a long time now so it was only natural that when the new AMD R Series cards launched that we would have one with Sapphires special touches in hand rather quickly. The model we have in hand is a R9-280X model which is a 7970 GHz model but its a Sapphire Toxic model which means it is their top clocked model. Being a 3GB model card we know that it is ready for high resolution and AA gaming and even crossfire up to 4 cards for maximum performance especially when pushing multiple high resolution displays. The Sapphire Radeon R9-280X Toxic model comes with a MSRP of $349 which places it about 50 dollars above some other models such as the MSI gaming series card we also received. MSI Radeon R9-280X 3GB Graphics Card

Feature

MSI Radeon R9-280X Gaming MSI as always dresses to impress with its non reference designs and well with the Radeon R series of cards there is no mistaking a MSI card from the rest as they carry very distinctive cooler designs and honestly when first seeing this card I was at a loss to tell it apart from the Nvidia 770 version I had tested some time ago when looking at it from the fans side. However once you get past the fans and shroud designs that is where the similarities end. The Radeon R series cards for the most part are actually a relaunch of the previous gen cards for the most part with only the top end R9-290X actually being an entirely new Hawaii based GPU. This is not necessarily a bad thing though as with this refresh or relaunch so to speak AMD has dropped the price ... Read More »

AMD and Mixamo Brings Face Plus that Revolutionize Character Art

FacePlus

AMD collaborate with Mixamo to launch Face Plus, an advanced real-time motion capture and 3D facial animation technology for the Unity game engine (v4.3). Face Plus leverages Unity’s blendshape technology and Mixamo’s rigging and animation algorithms where it is able to render expression captured with a webcam to 3D character in game in real time. This allows game developers to apply facial expressions to characters in games with vivid expressions that are captured from the webcam as oppose of traditional means of utilizing expensive equipment, sticky markers, and multiple 3D programs. The technology requires no proprietary hardware. All you need is a webcam, a system that runs Windows 7 or Windows 8 (where Mac OSX is coming soon) and a video cards taht supports Open CL 1.1 or higher. So, pretty much any current system should be able to run the plug-in, even those with integrated GPU. In the AMD Press ... Read More »

Gigabyte GA-F2A85XN-WIFI (A85X Mini-ITX) Motherboard   With only 17cm x 17 cm of area to work with, available real estate limits what manufacturers can put on a mini-ITX motherboard.
